April Update 2016

Statistics 32 cubs and 7 visiting beavers, 5 leaders and 6 core helpers

68 HIKES 208 NIGHTS AWAY Issue No 340

Once again glorious spring to summer term brings many great events for the Cub Pack. This year everything is underpinned with the Cub Centenary Programme. I am really looking forward to the District private showing of the new Disney Jungle book film on the 19th. Our Packs entry, like Quazar is paid for by a legacy from Kevin Walker a much loved Leader and Dad lost last year. Remember him in your thoughts.

Remember we have a big programme and try to do worthwhile events, some have no cost, many are inexpensive a few demand premium cost. Do what you are comfortable with. If you have an issue speak with a uniformed Leader.

Do what you can, help if you can when asked. The pack belongs to all its members, it’s very nice to see our group going younger again after all those big noisy cubs who have just left. Places remain at a premium in the pack with no sign of any movement within the scout troop.

Core events:

We are planning a number of trips and some require booking in advance, signup sheets and information are available on the front desk.

Currently we require numbers and deposits/payment for the following now.

  1. Sunday 1st May Joseph Harlow Playhouse theatre, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is possibly the best Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s childrens musical, a truly magical experience. Last call for ticket bookings this Tuesday 22nd Please note this is a family event and Cubs need a parent with them. This event is almost fully booked out, if you wish to attend contact the Playhouse direct. Tickets already booked are available from our front desk.

  2. Sixers and Seconders are invited to District Backwoods day Saturday 16th April, at Damemead, Cubs Sixers and seconders will also have the opportunity to sleep over Saturday night and have a skills minicamp, this will cost £20, we will take all our allocated Sixer and seconder places and replace any Sixers or Seconders not going.

Jungle Book Tuesday 19th April 6:20pm Lee valley Odeon

Mr Disney has produced a new Jungle Book motion picture and we intend every Local cub to see the film on Tuesday 19th April. If you have seen the on line trailers the film looks awesome. Your Scout group will pay for our Cubs and Beavers to attend and additional tickets may be available at a special price of £5.50. This should be a great evening out, remember Cubs are themed on the original Jungle book stories by Rudyard Kipling.

St George’s day Sunday 24th April

Assemble Willow Cafe Overspill Car Park, Bury Road. At 14.00 hrs. Full uniform smart shoes. Cubs will be dismissed from Chingford Green around two hours later.

Board Game afternoon Saturday 14th May 2-4PM

This is a new District activity for Centenary year and free. Cubs can bring 50p for a raffle ticket should they wish. This is at the 10th Chingford Scout hut St. Francis Church Hall, Hawkwood Crescent. Cubs must book a place in advance at our front desk.

The Historic Chatham Docks Saturday 21st May

This is a great day out which we need to be booking now. Warships, submarines, rope factory, ships chandeliers, life boats, the place HMS Victory was built, we won’t cover everything in one visit. Our Pack has not visited Chatham for a few years but this day is second only to Portsmouth Docks (only just, and nearer and cheaper). Cost £22 for the full day trip.

5 a side football tournament Saturday 28th May

New event 12-2:30 on the above date, the pack should be able to send a couple of teams. Taking place at Goals. If interested speak with Kaa (Peter Scott) who is co-ordinating the event.

Details to follow and to be confirmed.

Gilwell Park Funday Saturday 18th June

This is an annual National event the Packs supports, There will be additional Cub centenary activity this year and tickets will sell out quickly. Your Scout Group has brought a batch of 25 tickets which we sell at a discounted price of £10 to Pack members. Normal cost is £15. Great day out remember once sold out they are gone.

Kubadoo Saturday 16th July

This is a Bi-annual County event the Packs supports, There will be additional Cub centenary activity this year and tickets need to be booked in advance. Your Scout Group is attending and the cost for Cubs is £10. The event runs from 10am-4pm, cubs need a packed lunch, uniform but dress for the weather. Great day out remember this one needs car sharing.

Chingford swimming Gala Sunday 17th July

We have won this for the past two years, I am sure our cubs are strong enough swimmers this year.

New Leader

Although we have a strong team and great support from parents and friends the pack needs a new leader. Akela is looking for an Adult who enjoys working with the Cub age group and has the commitment to be a leader. Akela is seeking specific skill sets to enhance our pack leadership team. If you are, or know somebody who could be a new leader send them to see me.

Active Kids Vouchers

Please remember we are collecting Active Kids Vouchers from Sainsbury’s, Ask for them when shopping there. Each voucher helps keep our costs down.

Blacklist

We have three “black lists” in the pack:

Cubs who do not camp (six cubs)

Cubs who do not hike (six cubs)

Parents who don’t help (three families)

I mention this for two reasons, firstly if you are on any of these lists your child is missing out. Secondly our scout group is oversubscribed and not allowing those who don’t full participate in the group to progress to the next section, is an easy way to help resolve our lack of spaces issue. This is not something I control.
