32 nd Scout Troop Chingford

Hello and welcome to the new monthly Scouts newsletter. I have shamelessly stolen the

idea from the cubs section as I know how useful it is to know what activities are coming up.

I have recently taken over as Scout Leader after a number of years of helping out as a

parent and in case some of you don’t know me, I am a father of 4 children (1 in explorers,

1 in scouts, 1 in cubs and 1 about to start beavers) and also have had previous experience

of working with young people when I used to work for PGL holiday company and ran a

number of children’s activity holidays for Asthma UK.

Although I have some experience, I am still learning the ropes as a Scout Leader so

please bear with me. What we aim to do is to bring a bit more structure, discipline and fun

activities to the scout meetings but it will take a bit of time. If you have any questions,

comments or suggestions please let me know at apladbury@btinternet.com or speak to

me or any of the other leaders, Terry, Andy , Lauren and Maricris.

Core programme activities:

As part of the year’s core programme we will be looking to complete a number of the scout

badges. Thee are a number of the badges that scouts can complete outside of the scout

meeting and your support in helping the scouts complete these badges would be helpful.

Some of the badges scouts could complete are Artist, Chef, Entertainer, Physical

Recreation, Astronomer and many others.

As well as the individual badges we will also be looking to complete some group badges

over the next few weeks including teamwork, electronics and cycling.

As well as the badges we will also be doing the following activities over the next few weeks

1. Shooting and climbing at Gilwell Park

2. Orienteering

3. Swimming

4. Wide games on the plains

5. Patrol challenges

As part of the patrol challenges we will be keeping a record of each patrol’s achievements

with rewards for the hardest working patrol.

Parent helpers

Although we have a strong team of 5 leaders as we have such a large group we will

usually need at least one parent helper each week. I hope to set up a parent rota and

hope that you will be able to volunteer at least once during the year..

Group rules

We have three simple rules for the Scout Pack

1. Honour the opening and closing ceremony – this includes wearing the uniform

2. Respect the leaders and each other

3. Take part in the activities.

We also operate a three strike rule, if a scout needs to be spoken to 3 times or more in

one evening, they will be asked to not attend the following week’s meeting. Part of being a

Scout is to be a positive member of the local community in and out of scouts and we hope

by complying by the group rules we will help the scouts do this.

We have also asked the scouts to draft rules for the leaders and I will share these in the

newsletter next month.
